Article from Microscope : Research issued at Storage Expo by a number of leading vendors indicated users still fail to understand the importance of protecting data. Veritas revealed that 93 per cent of UK businesses had suffered unplanned downtime in the last year, but few were taking disaster recovery seriously, leaving their data exposed to future problems. Jason Phippen, director of Emea product marketing, said there were still too many businesses exposing themselves to the risk of losing their data in a disaster. "Companies are not taking disaster recovery seriously. The risks are there, with a company going out of business if it doesn't get it right. This is a wake-up call and companies need to be more responsible," he said. Research from Computer Associates added to a growing picture of confusion among users, highlighting the lack of understanding about what has to be done to stored data under the terms of the Data Protection Act. "Users have indicated that the market is complicated and they don't know how to apply [good business governance] to their day-to-day operations," said a CA spokesman. At the same time, Hitachi Data Systems produced results of its latest Storage Index, pointing to plans by businesses to prioritise storage management. In a statement, John Taffinder, executive vice-president Emea at Hitachi Data Systems, said the market would continue growing as "companies strive for operational efficiency".
